This Gospel is unsettling. Jesus could very easily be directing it to the Jewish among him, as hinted at in the first reading. We know that historically, many Jewish people did not accept him. Instead, more Gentiles seemed to accept his Word.
But could it be directed to us as well? Is our faith genuine? Often I hear people talk about being Christian and then don’t see evidence of it in their thoughts and actions.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus encourages us to live our faith, not just “practice” it by saying we are faithful. Just because we appear to be in Jesus’ company, does not make us part of it.
How do we make our faith real so that Jesus will open the door for us?
