I have to say that I find this week’s readings a little startling, although God had already been planting those same ideas in my head as I have been scurrying to get the house cleaned and do yard work. . . do. . . . do. . . . do.
Ecclesiastes states it very well. He speaks of toiling, working hard under the sun and the inability to find rest–even at night. It makes me wonder whether we make work our “god.”
We spend a lot of time taking care of things that seem important to us, but aren’t in the larger scheme of things.
Ecclesiastes calls that “vanity.”
Paul urges the Colossians in the second reading to “think of what is above and not here on Earth.” He speaks of idolatry: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire. . . greed.
Our behavior should reflect the idea that Christ is in and for all.
Jesus goes on to tell people to beware of greed. Possessions do not make one’s life, even if one spends his entire life working to collect them. We should be working for what matters to God.
Let us ask God to help us put our priorities in proper perspective.
